Melilli: Failed attempt to blow up UniCredit ATM

An attempted robbery of a UniCredit ATM in Melilli, Sicily, occurred shortly before 2:00 AM on Via Iblea. A group of criminals attempted to use a “marmotta” technique—placing a small improvised explosive device in the ATM slot to force it open—but the heist failed.

During the incident, the perpetrators reportedly fired gunshots to cover their escape. They abandoned the unexploded device and flammable liquid at the scene. In response to the threat, the Carabinieri of Augusta evacuated several families living in the buildings above and adjacent to the bank to ensure public safety.

Bomb disposal specialists arrived at dawn to recover the rudimentary explosive, which was later safely detonated in a nearby quarry. Local Mayor Giuseppe Carta praised the rapid intervention of law enforcement, noting that the explosion could have seriously endangered residents. Investigations are currently underway, with authorities reviewing surveillance footage to identify those responsible.
