ATM explosions and robbery attempts in Italy

Overview

A series of attempted or successful ATM robberies involving explosives has been reported in Italy. In Melilli, Sicily, criminals attempted to use a “marmotta” technique—placing an improvised explosive device in a UniCredit ATM slot—to force it open. The heist failed, and perpetrators reportedly fired gunshots during their escape. Authorities evacuated nearby residents while bomb disposal specialists safely detonated the abandoned device in a quarry. In Colletorto, Molise, an ATM at the Banca di Credito Cooperativa del Molise was targeted by two explosions around 3:20 AM, causing significant structural damage. On the night of September 5-6, a similar attempt occurred in Rozzano using a device filled with gunpowder. During the weekend of September 12-13, coordinated attacks targeted the Lombardy region, including Paderno Dugnano, Melegnano, and Zibido San Giacomo. On September 15, an explosive device was detonated at a Bper branch in Cesano Maderno, followed by an attack on a Unicredit branch in Treviglio the next morning. On September 29, a new attempt occurred in Ruvo di Puglia at a Banca del Mezzogiorno ATM in Piazza Bovio. Around 2:30 AM, at least three masked individuals used explosive charges in the cash dispenser, resulting in two violent explosions that damaged the branch entrance. The robbery failed when private security guards arrived, forcing the suspects to flee in a white Alfa Romeo Giulietta. On October 2 and 3, an organized group of approximately 12 individuals carried out coordinated attacks in Sortino, Sicily. Targeting Monte dei Paschi di Siena and Banca Agricola Popolare di Sicilia ATMs, the group used a heavy vehicle to block Viale Mario Giardino and an excavator to uproot and remove the machines. The perpetrators fled in approximately three cars.
