Melissa Barrera open to ‘Scream’ return if rights leave Spyglass

Actress Melissa Barrera has stated she is open to reprising her role as Sam Carpenter in the ‘Scream’ franchise, provided the film rights are no longer held by Spyglass Media Group.

Barrera, who starred in ‘Scream 5’ and ‘Scream 6’, was dismissed from the franchise in 2023 following social media posts regarding the conflict in Gaza. At the time, Spyglass Media Group stated they do not tolerate antisemitism or hate speech. Barrera has expressed that her issue lies with the company’s leadership and their handling of the situation rather than the films themselves, noting she still holds affection for the series and the time spent filming it.

She indicated that a return would be possible if the rights were transferred to a party that she believes would better respect the legacy of the late Wes Craven. Following her departure, other key figures including Jenna Ortega and director Christopher Landon also exited the project.
