Melissa Barrera sets condition for return to Scream franchise

Actress Melissa Barrera has stated she would consider returning to the ‘Scream’ franchise only if the rights are transferred away from Spyglass Media Group. In a recent interview with JustWatch, Barrera expressed her continued affection for the horror series but maintained that her relationship with the current studio leadership is irreparably damaged.

Barrera, who played Sam Carpenter in ‘Scream’ (2022) and ‘Scream VI’ (2023), was dismissed from the franchise in November 2023 following social media posts regarding the Israel-Hamas war. Spyglass Media Group defended the decision at the time, citing a ‘zero tolerance for antisemitism or the incitement of hate in any form.’

Barrera criticized the studio for labeling her in ways she rejected and noted that the company has never apologized, even when she felt vindicated. She clarified that even an apology would not be sufficient to work with them again. She noted that she would only return if the franchise passed to new owners who would ‘honor Wes Craven’s legacy.’
