Melivia chestnut producers anticipate stable harvest and price stability

Producers in Melivia, Greece’s primary chestnut-growing region, are expressing cautious optimism regarding the upcoming harvest. Vangelis Kraniotis, president of the Agricultural Cooperative of Melivia, noted that while a small amount of chestnuts may fall by the end of the month, the bulk of the harvest is expected in October.

Yield estimates depend on the number of chestnuts per hull. Producers expect average productivity if hulls contain two chestnuts, but a higher yield if they contain three. Conversely, a higher percentage of empty hulls could lead to a smaller harvest.

Regarding market economics, producers are seeking to maintain last year’s price levels, where extra-grade chestnuts reached approximately €3.95. However, rising costs for fuel, energy, labor, and agricultural inputs may impact price stability. While Italian buyers have made exploratory inquiries, final pricing will ultimately be determined by supply and demand.
