Melnik grape producers face market challenges despite good harvest

Grape producers in Bulgaria’s Melnik region are facing significant economic challenges despite a healthy harvest. While white grape varieties are fetching between 90 cents and 1.10 euros per kilogram, red varieties such as Merlot, Cabernet, and Melnik 55 are seeing prices drop to approximately 60-70 cents per kilogram.

Producers report that the increased yields are only partially offsetting the impact of low purchase prices. Rising costs for labor, water, and maintenance are further squeezing profit margins. In some instances, the cost of harvesting may exceed the potential revenue, leading some farmers to consider leaving the grapes unharvested.

Climate conditions have also added pressure, as prolonged droughts have made irrigation essential. Many growers are increasingly investing in drip irrigation systems to sustain their crops, often utilizing specialized funding programs to manage these additional expenses.
