Overview

Grape producers in Bulgaria’s Melnik region are experiencing economic difficulties despite a healthy harvest. While white grape varieties maintain prices between 90 cents and 1.10 euros per kilogram, red varieties including Merlot, Cabernet, and Melnik 55 have seen prices drop to approximately 60-70 cents per kilogram.

Increased yields have only partially offset the impact of these low purchase prices. Profit margins are being further squeezed by rising costs for labor, water, and maintenance, leading some farmers to consider leaving grapes unharvested if costs exceed potential revenue. Additionally, prolonged droughts have necessitated investments in drip irrigation systems to sustain crops.
