Italian Parliament defeats key amendment to electoral law

The Italian Chamber of Deputies rejected the government‑backed amendment that would have introduced preferential voting into the pending electoral reform. The secret ballot resulted in 188 votes against and 187 in favour, a one‑vote margin that knocked the ruling centre‑right coalition below the required majority.

Prime Minister Giorgia Meloni described the outcome as a loss “to the swamp” and called for reflection, while opposition leaders demanded the government’s resignation and hinted at possible early elections. Within the coalition, accusations of “franchi tiratori” – deputies who voted against the party line – have sparked an internal hunt, with parties such as Fratelli d’Italia, Lega, Forza Italia and Futuro Nazionale blaming each other for the defeat.

The episode prompted protests in the chamber, a suspension of the session, and the filming of the secret‑vote process by Futuro Nazionale deputies, which opposition MPs condemned as a breach of parliamentary decorum. The setback highlights growing fractures in Meloni’s majority ahead of the 2027 general election.
