Traditional games initiatives promote literacy and memory in Brazil

Various cultural and educational initiatives in Brazil are focusing on traditional games and childhood memories. In Campo Grande, the Escola Municipal Profª Leire Pimentel de Carvalho Corrêa is concluding its ‘Semana do Brincar’ (Play Week). Supported by the Municipal Secretariat of Education, the project ‘ABC do Brincar – Juntos pela Alfabetização’ uses traditional play to assist in the literacy process.

The event includes the launch of the children's book ‘O Baú de Brincadeiras da Vó Elza’, which highlights popular games from Mato Grosso do Sul, such as ‘queimada’ and corn cob dolls. The program aims to bridge generational gaps and promote child development through play. Additionally, 100 families are receiving educational kits.

Separately, the ‘Memórias de Rua’ project is hosting a free event at Parque da Cultura. The activity features nine traditional, non-digital games, including spinning tops, petecas, and marbles, with monitors available to teach rules and techniques to children and their families.
