Mendoza legislators propose mandatory training for drunk driving sanctions

A new legislative initiative in Mendoza seeks to reform sanctions for driving under the influence of alcohol. Proposed by Deputy María Inés Ramos of the La Libertad Avanza bloc, the project aims to amend the Contravencional Code and the Transit Security Law.

The proposal introduces the ‘Provincial Program for the Prevention of Recidivism in Traffic Infractions due to Positive Alcohol Levels’. Under this scheme, drivers sanctioned for alcohol consumption—particularly repeat offenders—would be required to complete and pass a mandatory psychoeducational training course before they can regain their driving privileges following a period of disqualification.

The initiative follows a significant increase in alcohol testing in Mendoza, with controls rising by 241% year-on-year in 2024. The goal is to supplement existing fines and driving bans with educational tools designed to prevent recidivism.
