Meningitis awareness gaps identified in international survey
An international survey conducted by GSK and Human8, marking World Meningitis Day, reveals a significant lack of awareness regarding invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). The study indicates that only 27% of parents and 10% of adolescents are aware that the disease can become life-threatening within hours. Additionally, one in five respondents is unaware of the initial symptoms.
IMD is a leading cause of meningitis and septicemia. While relatively rare, it can cause severe complications or death, particularly in previously healthy children and adolescents. Survivors face a high risk of long-term consequences, with approximately 20% suffering from issues such as skin scarring, limb amputation, hearing or vision loss, memory impairment, and brain damage.
The World Health Organization estimates that meningitis affects approximately 2.5 million people annually and causes around 250,000 deaths worldwide. Bacterial meningitis, specifically caused by Neisseria meningitidis, carries the poorest prognosis and can be fatal within hours if not treated promptly. In its bacterial form, about one in six infected individuals dies.
