Global meningitis awareness and prevention efforts

Overview

World Meningitis Day, observed on October 5, serves as a global platform to increase awareness of meningitis, an infectious disease causing inflammation of the brain and spinal cord membranes. The disease can be caused by viruses, bacteria, fungi, or tumors, and if left untreated, may lead to severe brain damage, disability, or death.

An international survey conducted by GSK and Human8 highlighted significant awareness gaps regarding invasive meningococcal disease (IMD). The study found that only 27% of parents and 10% of adolescents are aware that the disease can become life-threatening within hours, and one in five respondents were unaware of initial symptoms. Bacterial meningitis, caused by Neisseria meningitidis, is noted for its poor prognosis, with approximately one in six infected individuals dying.

Prevention efforts focus heavily on vaccination, particularly against pathogens like pneumococcus and meningococcus types A and C. In Spain, the Telde City Council has signaled support for public health information by committing to illuminate its main building in green to symbolize solidarity with those affected.
