Meningitis risk perception gap identified in global survey
A global survey conducted by Human8 and promoted by GSK, covering six countries including Italy, Argentina, Australia, Brazil, France, and Spain, reveals a significant gap between knowledge and risk perception regarding meningitis.
In Italy, while 85% of parents and 68% of adolescents are aware of the disease, only 28% of parents believe a young person could develop it within the next year. The study highlights that Italian awareness of meningitis risk is lower than in other surveyed nations. Among Italian youth, there is a critical underestimation of the disease's severity; only 26% are aware it can be fatal, and just 8% know it can become life-threatening within hours.
Regarding prevention, 30% of Italian adolescents are unsure if they have been vaccinated, and 12% of parents are uncertain of their child's vaccination status. While many individuals use social media and AI for health information, there is widespread uncertainty regarding the reliability of these digital sources, emphasizing the importance of medical professionals in guiding vaccination decisions.
