Meningitis awareness and vaccination gaps in Italy

Overview

A global survey involving several countries, including Italy, has identified a significant gap between public knowledge and the perceived risk of meningitis. In Italy, findings indicate that while awareness of the disease exists, there is a critical underestimation of its severity; for instance, only 8% of surveyed Italian youth were aware that the disease can become life-threatening within hours.

Following these findings, the Italian Society of Pediatrics (Sip) reported that approximately 1.78 million children and adolescents in Italy lack complete vaccination coverage against meningococcal B. This data, derived from an analysis of birth cohort and Ministry of Health records, prompted pediatricians to call for urgent action to address regional disparities and complete missing doses. Medical professionals emphasized that meningococcal meningitis can progress rapidly, potentially causing death within 24 to 48 hours or leaving survivors with permanent neurological deficits.
