Mental health professionals advocate for suicide prevention through intervention and support
Health professionals gathered at North-West University’s Mahikeng Campus to observe Suicide Prevention and Mental Health Awareness Day. Under the theme “Changing the narrative on suicide,” the event focused on reducing stigma and encouraging early intervention through multidisciplinary collaboration between social workers, nurses, and psychologists.
A central component of the program was the “Circle of Resilience,” which emphasized that resilience is built through community support, hope, and professional assistance rather than facing challenges in isolation. Organizers stressed the importance of creating environments where individuals feel safe to seek help before reaching a crisis point.
In the United States, suicide remains a significant public health challenge. CDC data recorded 48,824 suicide deaths in 2024, with an age-adjusted rate of 13.7 deaths per 100,000 people. While awareness campaigns help reduce stigma, experts note that effective prevention requires concrete interventions, including mental health treatment, crisis follow-up, and restricting access to lethal means.
