Global mental health and suicide prevention efforts

In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, mental health experts in Greece, Malaysia, and Nepal are calling for increased interventions and a shift in how psychological distress is perceived.

In Greece, officials noted that KLIMAKA’s Suicide Observatory recorded 579 deaths in 2025, part of a larger trend of 2,946 deaths between 2020 and 2025. Experts emphasized the necessity of early recognition of behavioral changes to prevent crises. In Malaysia, reports indicated a rise in cases, with 1,114 recorded by police in 2024. Data from 2023 showed that nearly one million adults in Malaysia experience depression, a prevalence that has doubled since 2019. Advocates highlighted that social stigma remains a barrier to seeking help, following the decriminalization of attempted suicide in September 2025.

In Nepal, professionals are advocating for a change in the narrative regarding vulnerability. Clinical observations suggest a misconception that suicide only affects those who appear visibly weak. Families of the deceased often report that individuals appeared “confident, successful, or emotionally resilient,” highlighting that outward resilience does not grant immunity to internal distress.
