Overview

Global mental health advocates continue to call for increased community-based interventions and a reduction in social stigma to combat rising suicide rates. Consequently, KKM is working with the Public Service Department to develop Mental Health Guidelines and a Mental Health Index, while also collaborating with the Ministry of Education to mitigate suicide risks among students through increased literacy and counseling. In the Maldives, officials marked World Mental Health Day by advocating for the removal of social stigmas and negative labels. Health Minister Ginaan Ali stated that mental well-being requires ‘active listening to those suffering from loneliness and distress’ rather than relying on policy alone. First Lady Sajidha Mohamed noted the progress of the healthcare sector, including the opening of new mental health centers. To support these efforts, the government introduced a dedicated mental health helpline, ‘1677’, in 2024, which has been utilized by more than 23,000 individuals.
