Mental health professionals in Nepal urge shift in suicide prevention narrative

In observance of World Suicide Prevention Day, mental health professionals in Nepal are highlighting the need to change the narrative surrounding psychological distress. Observations from over eight years of clinical work suggest a common misconception that suicide only affects those who appear visibly vulnerable or “not strong enough.”

Families of those lost often report that the deceased appeared confident, successful, or emotionally resilient. This reveals a tendency to associate vulnerability with visible weakness, assuming that individuals who support others or possess professional mental health knowledge are immune to suffering. The report emphasizes that resilience does not grant immunity to distress and that even those who appear to be coping effectively may be struggling internally.
