Mental health: Recognizing warning signs and providing support

Recognizing the warning signs of mental health struggles and suicidal ideation is critical for providing timely support. Key indicators often include unusual changes in behavior, such as social isolation, sudden shifts in mood, or changes in sleeping and eating patterns. Verbal cues can range from direct statements of hopelessness to more subtle comments about not being around much longer.

Behavioral signs may include giving away personal belongings, withdrawing from enjoyed activities, or increased substance use. In children, sadness and potential bullying are concerns, while older adults may exhibit extreme isolation or declining physical health. Experts suggest that if sadness or significant mood changes persist for more than two weeks, professional intervention should be considered.

Psychological First Aid (PFA) provides a framework for immediate support to reduce distress and connect individuals to specialized services. While PFA does not require professional training, it emphasizes recognizing personal limits and knowing when to activate emergency responses. The National Institute of Mental Health (NIMH) suggests evaluating the intensity and duration of symptoms to determine if self-care is sufficient or if professional help is necessary.
