Menteng, Jakarta stabilizes after deadly street clash
On 26 July 2026 a violent clash erupted in Matraman Dalam, Pegangsaan, Menteng, Jakarta, involving two motorcyclists and about five associates who damaged a nasi uduk vendor’s cart and ignited vehicles and buildings. The incident left one person dead and prompted a police investigation, with the cart seized as evidence. Camat of Menteng, Nurhelmi Savitri, pledged that the damaged cart would be replaced by the following Tuesday, assuring the vendor could resume business.
By 28 July 2026, street activity had largely returned to normal. Vendors, including batagor and tea sellers, reopened stalls along Jalan Tambak and the nearby bazaar, while police and TNI remained on patrol to maintain order. Residents reported a calmer atmosphere, although some remained cautious.
The local administration also said it would strengthen coordination with community leaders to prevent future incidents.
