Merapi volcano activity remains high, officials urge vigilance

The Balai Penyelidikan dan Pengembangan Teknologi Kebencanaan Geologi (BPPTKG) reported that volcanic activity at Gunung Merapi stayed at level 3 (Siaga) during the week of 24‑30 July 2026. Monitoring showed continued magma supply, producing frequent lava flows and two hot‑ash clouds that traveled up to 2 km downriver valleys such as Boyong, Krasak, Bebeng and Sat/Putih. Seismic instruments recorded dozens of events, including 31 shallow volcanic tremors and 647 rock‑fall quakes, though overall shaking intensity was lower than the previous week. The agency warned that the main hazards are lava and hot‑ash avalanches affecting downstream areas up to 5‑7 km, and urged residents to stay alert and follow safety instructions.
