Overview

Volcanic activity at Mount Merapi has remained high, with the Balai Penyelidikan dan Pengembangan Teknologi Kebencanaan Geologi (BPPTKG) maintaining a level 3 (Siaga) alert status.

During the final week of July 2026, monitoring indicated a continuous magma supply that produced frequent lava flows and two hot-ash clouds traveling up to 2 km downriver valleys. Seismic activity during this period included 31 shallow volcanic tremors and 647 rock-fall quakes.

By August 12, 2026, the volcano released pyroclastic flows that traveled an estimated 1,800 meters toward the headwaters of Kali Krasak and Kali Boyong. Seismic activity during the early morning of August 12 was characterized by collapse and hybrid earthquakes.

On the night of August 28, 2026, Mount Merapi released pyroclastic flows (Awan Panas Guguran) covering approximately 2 kilometers toward the southwest, specifically toward the upper reaches of the Kali Sat/Putih river. This event recorded a maximum seismogram amplitude of 87.74 mm and a duration of 116.97 seconds. The volcano remains in an effusive eruption phase with consistent magma supply causing lava dome growth at the summit. Authorities continue to advise the public to avoid danger zones and riverbeds originating from the volcano, including the Boyong, Bedog, Krasak, Bebeng, Putih, Woro, and Gendol rivers.
