Mercadona expands Portuguese presence with new stores

Mercadona is continuing its expansion across Portugal with several new store openings. The supermarket chain recently inaugurated its first unit in the Algarve region at the Nova Vila Retail Park in Portimão. This €6.5 million investment features a 1,900-square-meter sales area and has created 100 direct permanent jobs. As part of its social responsibility initiatives, the company has established a protocol with the Banco Alimentar do Algarve to donate daily food items.

Further expansion is planned for the Algarve, with a new store scheduled to open in Faro on November 12. Additionally, the company has announced that a new location will open in Pedrouços, in the Porto district, on November 5, 2026. With the Portimão opening, Mercadona now operates 77 stores in Portugal, having completed eight of its twelve planned openings for the current year.
