Mercadona expansion in Portugal
Overview
Mercadona is continuing its expansion within the Portuguese market. Following existing operations in Évora and Setúbal, the Spanish supermarket chain opened a new store in the Beja Jardim Commercial Park on September 3, marking its entry into the Beja district. This opening was the sixth new store launched by the company in Portugal during 2026. The Beja investment exceeded 5 million euros and employed 64 workers on permanent contracts.
The retailer has since expanded its presence to include Vila Real, where it invested over 9.5 million euros to open a 1,900-square-meter facility. This 76th store in the country created 74 permanent jobs and features specialized departments such as butchery, fishmonger, bakery, and a self-service prepared meal area, supported by 180 parking spaces. As of mid-September, Mercadona operates more than 75 stores and employs approximately 7,500 people in Portugal.
Expansion plans continue with recruitment underway for a future location in Palhais, Charneca da Caparica, scheduled to open in January 2027. The company has also announced plans for a new store in Alfragide, Amadora, for February 2027. In October 2026, the company inaugurated its first unit in the Algarve region at the Nova Vila Retail Park in Portimão, a €6.5 million investment that created 100 direct permanent jobs.
Furthering its Algarve presence, Mercadona has announced plans for a new store in Olhão, scheduled for 2027. Recruitment for this location has already begun, offering permanent contracts with various weekly shifts ranging from 15 to 40 hours. The company is providing paid training and benefits including meal allowances and performance bonuses, with projected annual gross salaries ranging from approximately 5,734 euros to 20,915 euros, plus additional subsidies.
