Mercadona expands Portuguese presence with new stores in Vila Real and Beja

The supermarket chain Mercadona is continuing its expansion across Portugal with the opening of new locations in the Vila Real and Beja districts.

In Vila Real, the company invested over 9.5 million euros to open its first store in the district. The 1,900-square-meter facility has created 74 permanent jobs. Local officials noted that the investment is expected to boost the local economy and reinforce the available commercial offerings for the population.

In the Alentejo region, Mercadona has opened its first store in Beja with an investment exceeding 5 million euros, employing 64 workers on permanent contracts. This expansion serves as a precursor to the company’s planned entry into the Algarve region, with openings scheduled for Portimão in October and Faro shortly thereafter.

With these recent developments, the retailer’s presence in Portugal has grown to 76 stores.
