Mercadona tests Bizum Pay for in-store transactions
Mercadona, Spain’s highest-revenue supermarket chain, is currently testing Bizum Pay as a potential new payment method for its physical stores. Developed by a consortium of major Spanish banks, the solution allows for instant transfers via mobile devices, functioning similarly to contactless card payments but without the need for card company intermediaries.
Internal sources indicate the project is in an early stage. If testing proves successful, the company, founded by Juan Roig, intends to integrate the method into its existing payment options. While Bizum announced its physical retail solution in May, widespread adoption remains gradual as individual banks enable the service independently.
Separately, Mercadona has announced several new job vacancies across various Spanish provinces, including Madrid, Barcelona, Valencia, and Zaragoza. The roles range from store personnel to technical maintenance and delivery positions, with monthly gross salaries reaching up to 2,346 euros depending on the work schedule.
