Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO Appointed Official FIA Safety Car for Formula 1
Mercedes‑AMG has introduced the GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ as the new official FIA safety car for Formula 1, debuting at the Hungarian Grand Prix. The rollout coincides with the 30th anniversary of Mercedes‑AMG’s involvement in F1 safety‑car duties and marks the 14th Mercedes model to serve in the role.
The GT 63 PRO features a 4.0‑litre twin‑turbo V8 delivering 612 bhp (450 kW) and 850 Nm of torque, paired with a nine‑speed AMG Speedshift MCT transmission and a fully variable Performance 4MATIC+ all‑wheel‑drive system—the first such drivetrain on an F1 safety car. Aerodynamic revisions, including a redesigned front splitter, dive planes and an active rear wing, improve high‑speed stability, while integrated LED lights in the rear wing signal race‑control instructions (orange for no overtaking, green for overtaking permitted). Top speed is rated at 317 km/h.
Long‑time safety‑car driver Bernd Mayländer continues behind the wheel. In addition, Mercedes‑AMG supplies the GT 63 S 4MATIC+ as the official F1 medical car, capable of 0‑100 km/h in 3.2 seconds and a top speed of 315 km/h.
