Mercedes‑AMG F1 safety‑car launch
Entities: Bernd Mayländer · FIA · Mercedes-AMG · Hungarian Grand Prix · Mercedes-AMG GT 63 PRO
Overview
Mercedes‑AMG introduced the GT 63 PRO 4MATIC+ as the 14th official FIA Formula 1 safety car at the 2026 Hungarian Grand Prix (24‑26 July 2026). Veteran driver Bernd Mayländer piloted the vehicle, which replaces the GT Black Series after 51 events. The launch marks the 30th anniversary of Mercedes‑AMG’s partnership with the FIA, begun in 1996.
The car is equipped with a 4.0‑litre twin‑turbo V8 delivering 612 hp (450 kW) and 850 Nm of torque, coupled to a nine‑speed AMG Speedshift MCT gearbox and the first fully variable all‑wheel‑drive system (AMG Performance 4MATIC+) used on an F1 safety car. Aerodynamic upgrades include a larger front splitter, additional dive‑plane elements, and an active rear wing with integrated signalling LEDs. A special black‑and‑red livery commemorates the anniversary and features CrowdStrike branding.
Mercedes‑AMG also confirmed that the GT 63 S 4MATIC+ will serve as the official F1 medical car, capable of 0‑100 km/h in 3.2 seconds with a top speed of 315 km/h. The safety car’s top speed is rated at 317 km/h.
