Mercedes and Volkswagen refine electric vehicle transition strategies

Major European automakers Mercedes-Benz and Volkswagen are refining their strategies to balance the transition from internal combustion engines to electric vehicles (EVs).

Mercedes-Benz CEO Ola Kellenius highlighted the launch of the new electric C-Class, noting that the company aims to preserve its brand identity through digitalization. Mercedes is utilizing modular platforms, such as MMA and MB.EA, to facilitate the rollout of 40 new models by the end of 2027. This strategy relies on a shared software platform, MB.OS, to streamline development across both electric and combustion models.

Volkswagen is also focusing on making electric mobility more accessible with the new ID. Polo, which aims for a starting price of 25,000 euros. Technical Development Board Member Kai Grünitz stated that Volkswagen will continue to develop both electric and traditional combustion engines as long as consumer demand and regulations permit. The ID. Polo incorporates customer feedback by reintroducing physical buttons and prioritizing practicality to compete with rising Chinese manufacturers.
