Mercedes Battles Reliability and Development to Keep 2026 F1 Lead Over Ferrari
Mercedes has identified a fault in a battery module that caused several power‑unit failures this season, prompting the team to introduce new modules during the campaign. Technical director James Allison said the issue is now understood and the upgrades should improve reliability, aiming to prevent further DNFs such as those suffered by George Russell and Kimi Antonelli.
Despite the reliability concerns, Mercedes still leads the 2026 Constructors’ Championship by 72 points. Ferrari’s recent upgrades, first unveiled in Miami and then refined in Barcelona, have narrowed the performance gap, and the Italian team’s package helped Lewis Hamilton secure a win that challenged Mercedes’ early‑season dominance. Allison noted that the 2026 regulations are still young, making continual development essential for maintaining the advantage. The next critical test will be the Austrian Grand Prix, where both teams will seek to solidify their positions.
