Mercedes-Benz conducts high-speed side-impact crash test with CLA models

Mercedes-Benz has performed what it describes as the world’s first public high-speed side-impact crash test involving two moving production vehicles. To simulate a severe real-world intersection collision, the automaker crashed a hybrid-powered CLA Shooting Brake into the driver’s side of an all-electric CLA, with both vehicles traveling at 56 km/h (35 mph).

During the collision, the hybrid vehicle's front end deformed to absorb energy while airbags deployed. In the electric vehicle, the side door absorbed much of the impact and windows shattered, triggering the deployment of side and center airbags. Following the crash, the electric vehicle's high-voltage battery remained intact and undamaged, and the system automatically disconnected the battery from the drivetrain. Additionally, the vehicle's hidden door handles automatically popped out and windows lowered to assist rescue efforts.

Testing involved eight crash-test dummies, representing four adults and four children. Mercedes-Benz reported that all measurements remained below biomechanical limits, indicating a low risk of life-threatening injuries. The company stated this demonstration is part of its 'Real-Life Safety' approach, which utilizes data from approximately 6,000 real-world accidents analyzed since 1969.
