Mercedes-Benz CLA side-impact crash testing

Overview

Mercedes-Benz conducted a high-speed side-impact crash test at its technology center in Sindelfingen, Germany, involving two production CLA models. To simulate a severe intersection collision, a hybrid CLA Shooting Brake collided with the driver’s side of an all-electric CLA at speeds of 56 km/h.

The test utilized eight crash-test dummies, representing four adults and four children. Results indicated that both vehicles maintained passenger compartment structural integrity, with forces remaining below biomechanical injury thresholds.

In the electric vehicle, the high-voltage battery remained intact and undamaged despite the impact. Safety systems responded by automatically disconnecting the battery from the drivetrain, popping out hidden door handles, and lowering windows to assist potential rescue efforts. The company noted that this demonstration is part of its ‘Real-Life Safety’ approach, which incorporates data from approximately 6,000 real-world accidents analyzed since 1969.
