Mercedes-Benz conducts high-speed side-impact crash test with CLA models

Mercedes-Benz has performed a world-first public high-speed side-impact crash test involving two production vehicles. The test, conducted at the company’s technology center in Sindelfingen, Germany, simulated a severe intersection collision.

A hybrid CLA Shooting Brake collided with the driver's side of a fully electric CLA at speeds of 56 km/h. Both vehicles weighed over two tonnes, and the impact occurred without any prior braking to replicate real-world emergency scenarios.

Results indicated that both vehicles maintained the structural integrity of their passenger compartments. Data from eight crash-test dummies—representing four adults and four children—showed that forces remained below biomechanical injury thresholds, suggesting a low risk of serious injury. Crucially, the high-voltage battery in the electric CLA remained intact and undamaged despite the direct impact to the vehicle's side.
