Mercedes defends George Russell after Spanish Grand Prix performance

Mercedes driver George Russell finished fifth at the Spanish Grand Prix following a strategic two-stop race. Mercedes Deputy Principal Bradley Lord explained that the team opted for a bold strategy during a Virtual Safety Car (VSC) period on lap 14. While Russell had started on hard tires, the team switched to medium tires to differentiate his pace from Charles Leclerc, who was also on hard tires.

This strategy involved a 20-lap stint on medium tires before returning to hard tires on lap 28. The move proved effective as Russell’s pace forced Leclerc into an earlier pit stop and allowed Russell to finish just 0.7 seconds behind him.

Following the race, Mercedes Team Principal Toto Wolff defended Russell against criticism regarding his performance and the 30-second gap to teammate Kimi Antonelli. Wolff highlighted Russell’s successful track record in karting, Formula 3, and Formula 2, describing him as a top-tier driver. Wolff noted that the team will evaluate psychological and technical aspects to help Russell fully realize his potential as they continue the championship season.
