Kimi Antonelli leads F1 drivers' title; Mercedes cites reliability woes
Italian teenager Kimi Antonelli tops the 2026 Formula 1 drivers' championship with 219 points, holding a 50‑point advantage over seven‑time world champion Lewis Hamilton and a 59‑point lead on teammate George Russell. Mercedes‑powered Antonelli has won six races so far and his lead has been described as “solid” by F1 president Stefano Domenicali.
Mercedes leads the constructors' championship by 72 points over Ferrari, but team boss Toto Wolff said reliability problems that caused three or four race retirements cost the team an estimated 70–80 points. Wolff also said he will not label Antonelli as the title favourite because of superstition.
Ferrari has signed Hamilton from Mercedes and hired former Mercedes chassis designer Luciano Nicomede as senior composite chassis designer. Hamilton, now in his second year with Ferrari, sits second in the drivers' standings with 169 points, 50 points behind Antonelli. Former champion Damon Hill praised Hamilton’s resurgence, calling him “cream that always rises to the top.”
Former MotoGP champion Valentino Rossi publicly backed Antonelli, saying the young Italian brings a new dimension to the sport. Several commentators, including former F1 champion Emerson Fittipaldi, noted that the reduced down‑force of the 2026 cars highlights driver talent, helping Hamilton improve his performance.
