Mercedes faces grid penalty dilemma for Antonelli and Russell
Mercedes faces a strategic dilemma regarding potential grid penalties for its drivers following a series of technical failures. Kimi Antonelli, currently leading the World Championship with 219 points, has exhausted his allocated budget for engine, battery, electronics, and exhaust components. The team is weighing whether to apply a penalty at Monza—Antonelli’s home race—or at the Baku circuit, where overtaking is easier.
Team mate George Russell is also facing component shortages, having reached the limit for his battery and electronics. Reliability issues have impacted both drivers, including a water leak in Hungary and a retirement in Canada.
Former driver Juan Pablo Montoya noted that while Mercedes' overall performance is expected, Antonelli’s rapid ascent to the championship lead has been a major surprise. Montoya highlighted the mental challenge for Russell, who sits third in the standings with 160 points, as he struggles to contend with his younger teammate and the rising threat from McLaren.
