Mercedes faces reliability setbacks threatening 2026 F1 title hopes

Mercedes team principal Toto Wolff said the growing reliability problems are becoming a threat to the team's 2026 Formula 1 championship aspirations after Italian rookie Kimi Antonelli suffered damage at Silverstone when he ran over a curb. Wolff noted the part that failed "shouldn't break" and referenced recent battery issues, adding that "you can’t win a world championship with three retirements."

Driver George Russell acknowledged a 25‑point gap to eventual winner Charles Leclerc as fair, but warned that Mercedes still lacks the pace to contest the title and said he would not be able to compete for the championship if performance does not improve. Antonelli, despite ending a five‑race winning streak, remained philosophical and said he will continue to race without focusing on the championship standings.
