Mercedes López Romero warns of eye damage from solar eclipse

Mercedes López Romero, a former Spanish deputy and physiotherapist, is issuing a warning against looking directly at the solar eclipse to prevent permanent eye damage. López, who suffers from 90% blindness, lost her vision after looking at the sun during an eclipse when she was eight years old.

In an interview with EFE, she cautioned that even using protective eyewear may not be sufficient for everyone and emphasized the extreme vulnerability of children. She noted that children's eyes are more sensitive, significantly increasing the risk of irreparable retinal damage. López recounted how her childhood attempt to compete with others to see how long they could stare at the sun resulted in her lifelong vision loss.
