George Russell cuts Kimi Antonelli gap with Silverstone second place
George Russell secured a second‑place finish for Mercedes at the British Grand Prix in Silverstone, reducing his championship deficit to teammate Kimi Antonelli to 25 points. Antonelli, who had been leading the race, suffered a wheel‑rim failure and later received a post‑race time penalty for exceeding track limits, leaving him outside the points.
Russell described the weekend as “very challenging” and said he had moved “beyond anger and frustration”. He praised his rivals Lewis Hamilton and Max Verstappen for their battles on track and noted that the straight‑line speed of the Mercedes was satisfactory, a point later confirmed by team principal Toto Wolff during a post‑race radio exchange.
Acknowledging Antonelli’s stronger form, Russell said the current 25‑point gap felt fair, adding that a margin of 10‑30 points seemed reasonable given their performances over the nine races so far. Former World Champion Jenson Button also commented that the W17 chassis suited Antonelli’s driving style better than Russell’s, contributing to the Italian’s early‑season dominance.
The result also narrowed the Constructors’ gap between Mercedes and Ferrari, with Ferrari’s Charles Leclerc winning the race and Lewis Hamilton finishing third.
