Mercedes weighs grid penalty for Kimi Antonelli at Monza

Mercedes-AMG Petronas is assessing whether to accept a grid‑penalty for its rookie driver Andrea Kimi Antonelli after the team exceeded its allocated internal‑combustion engine, exhaust, energy‑store and control‑electronics components for the season. If a penalty is taken, it would likely be applied at the Italian Grand Prix in Monza, a circuit the team considers easier for overtaking compared with tracks such as Zandvoort or Baku.

Team principal Toto Wolff said the squad hopes to avoid the sanction but is prepared to decide when and where to serve it, noting discussions with Antonelli’s father Marco. Wolff also mentioned Baku as an alternative venue. Antonelli suffered an electrical failure in his power unit at the Barcelona GP, preventing a second‑place finish, but still has one turbocharger and one MGU‑K unit remaining for the season.
