Merck opens €300 million bioprocessing hub in Daejeon, South Korea

Global life sciences company Merck has officially opened its Asia-Pacific Bioprocessing Production Center in the Dungok district of Daejeon, South Korea. The facility represents an investment of approximately 430 billion won (300 million euros), marking Merck’s largest single investment in the Asia-Pacific region to date.

Spanning roughly 43,000 to 44,500 square meters, the center will specialize in the mass production of essential biopharmaceutical materials, including dry powder and liquid cell culture media, process liquids, and sterile sampling solutions. This local production is expected to reduce reliance on foreign imports for critical bio-materials and strengthen the regional supply chain.

The facility is designed with sustainability in mind, utilizing solar power, heat pumps, and rainwater recycling to eliminate on-site fossil fuel use. Merck plans to create more than 300 new jobs by 2028, contributing to the local economy and fostering specialized talent through partnerships with regional universities and research institutions.
