Merck industrial expansions in South Korea

Overview

Merck has expanded its industrial footprint in South Korea through two major facility openings in October 2026.

In Eumseong, Merck Electronics inaugurated a production facility dedicated to manufacturing molybdenum precursors, such as molybdenum dichloride. This site aims to support the semiconductor industry, specifically serving regional clients like Samsung Electronics and SK Hynix by providing materials for advanced processes like Chemical Vapor Deposition.

In Daejeon, Merck opened its Asia-Pacific Bioprocessing Production Center in the Dungok district. Representing an investment of approximately 430 billion won (300 million euros), this facility marks Merck’s largest single investment in the Asia-Pacific region to date. Spanning roughly 43,000 to 44,500 square meters, the center focuses on the mass production of essential biopharmaceutical components, including dry powder and liquid cell culture media, process liquids, and sterile sampling solutions.

The center is intended to stabilize the domestic supply of bio-materials, reduce reliance on foreign imports, and strengthen the regional supply chain. Designed with sustainability in mind, the facility utilizes solar power, heat pumps, and rainwater recycling to eliminate on-site fossil fuel use. Merck plans to create more than 300 new jobs by 2028, contributing to the local economy and fostering specialized talent through partnerships with regional universities and research institutions.
