EFTA-Mercosur free trade agreement approved by Swiss Parliament

The Swiss Parliament has officially approved the free trade agreement between the European Free Trade Association (EFTA) and Mercosur. The deal, signed in Rio de Janeiro in September 2025, involves Switzerland, Norway, Iceland, and Liechtenstein on one side, and Argentina, Brazil, Paraguay, and Uruguay on the other.

While the agreement is already moving forward in Brazil, other nations are still in the legislative process. In Paraguay, the treaty has reached the Senate and received a favorable report from the Foreign Relations Commission. Officials suggest that 2027 could be a pivotal year for market access changes in the region.

The agreement aims to reduce trade barriers and facilitate the exchange of goods and services, including pharmaceuticals, machinery, and chemicals from EFTA nations, and agricultural products and precious metals from Mercosur. It also covers services, investments, public procurement, and sustainable development.
