Romania and Moldova face surge in vegetation and forest fires
Multiple regions in Romania and Moldova are facing a surge in vegetation and forest fires. In Romania, emergency services have been heavily mobilized to combat various outbreaks, including a significant 15-hectare forest fire in the Marginea area of Suceava and ongoing efforts to contain fires in the Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park involving helicopters and 150 personnel.
Other reported incidents include fires in Argeș, Vâlcea, Neamț, Iași, and Timiș counties. In Argeș, several localities were affected by fires consuming approximately 12,500 square meters of vegetation. In Timiș, firefighters responded to 16 different fires within a 24-hour period. In Moldova, firefighters in the Ocnița district successfully prevented fires from spreading to nearby forests in the village of Mereșeuca.
Authorities are issuing warnings regarding the dangers of burning dry vegetation, which is prohibited by law. Fines for individuals range from 7,500 to 15,000 lei, while legal entities face sanctions between 50,000 and 100,000 lei. Officials urge citizens to avoid leaving fires unattended and to refrain from discarding lit cigarettes or matches.
