Wildfires and emergency incidents in Romania and Moldova
Overview
Romania and Moldova continue to manage widespread vegetation and forest fires. In Romania, emergency services remain heavily mobilized to combat outbreaks across several counties, including Suceava, Argeș, Vâlcea, Neamț, Iași, and Timiș. Notable incidents include a 15-hectare forest fire in the Marginea area and 16 separate fires reported in Timiș within a 24-hour period.
In Brașov, firefighters are responding to twelve separate fires, including a significant blaze at the entrance to Dumbrăvița. This fire has affected approximately 10 hectares, with a risk of spreading to an additional 10–15 hectares. Crews are working to protect a high-voltage power line and nearby sheepfolds while attempting to prevent the flames from reaching the forest.
In the Domogled–Valea Cernei National Park and the Topleț area, recent rainfall has reduced the risk of fire expansion, though isolated hotspots persist. Containment efforts in the Crucea Albă and Cabana Mușuroaia sectors involve over 89 personnel, 22 technical vehicles, and two Black Hawk helicopters to locate and extinguish hidden fires in mountainous terrain.
In Moldova, firefighters in the Ocnița district successfully prevented fires from reaching homes or spreading to forests in the village of Mereșeuca. Earlier incidents in the Ciorescu suburb of Chișinău destroyed five worker housing wagons, though all 13 occupants evacuated safely.
Authorities continue to warn against the dangers of burning dry vegetation. In Romania, illegal burning carries fines of 7,500 to 15,000 lei for individuals and 50,000 to 100,000 lei for legal entities.
