Mersin legal proceedings: Child abuse and fatal crash trials

Two major legal proceedings are underway in Mersin, Turkey.

In the first case, an instructor, S. P. C., is being transferred to a High Criminal Court to face charges of 'torture' and 'cruelty' regarding the systematic abuse of a 5-year-old child with atypical autism. Following a forensic report indicating violence occurred on multiple dates, the prosecution is seeking harsher penalties. The defendant maintains that her actions were intended for education and were misinterpreted.

In the second case, a driver, Melis Kuş, is facing trial for a fatal accident on the D-400 highway. The incident, which occurred in February, involved a vehicle traveling at approximately 149 km/h in a 50 km/h zone, striking pedestrians on a median. The crash resulted in the deaths of four young cousins: Nejla Öztürk, Zehra Serdil Atak, Kübra Güney, and Büşra Güney. The court has ordered a re-examination of the accident site and has denied the defendant's request for release.
