Mersin Municipality implements agricultural support and branding initiatives
Mersin Metropolitan Municipality is implementing various initiatives to support local producers and enhance the region's agricultural brand. The municipality has provided direct material support to farmers in the Akdeniz district, including greenhouse rope for 3,000 producers, 100,000 sticky traps for 1,000 producers to combat pests, and 15,000 liters of hydrolyzed protein to protect citrus crops from the Mediterranean fruit fly.
In addition to material aid, the municipality is working to secure geographical indication status for local products to increase their economic value and protect regional heritage. Recent successes include the registration of Gülnar grapes and Kan Portakalı (blood orange). Applications for Bozyazı Gölevez and Mersin Black Fig are scheduled for 2026, while other products such as Leklek beans, Pirömerli narcissus, and Gravga plum are currently undergoing laboratory and field analysis to prepare for future registration applications.
