Mersin municipality intensifies pesticide spraying to curb flies and pests

The Mersin Metropolitan Municipality has stepped up insect and pest control operations for the summer season across the city's 13 districts. Environmental Protection and Control teams are conducting round‑the‑clock spraying, combining scheduled programmes with requests from residents, to target larvae, flies, mosquitoes, rats, cockroaches and other vermin that breed in streams, drainage ditches, sewers, green spaces, waste containers, irrigation pools, basement areas and water channels.

According to Kaplan Sandal, head of the pesticide‑spraying unit in the Tarsus Coordination Branch, the effort covers "56 central and 124 rural neighbourhoods" and includes ongoing larva‑control work. He added that work is also under way to restore the Şarlak stream. Residents were advised to keep animal waste away from living areas and to avoid leaving standing water in gardens.

The expanded campaign aims to reduce the nuisance and health risks associated with the seasonal surge in flies and other pests as temperatures rise.
