Mesa Airlines flight returns to Houston after windshield shatters

A Mesa Airlines flight, operating on behalf of United Airlines, was forced to make an emergency return to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston after the cockpit windshield shattered shortly after takeoff. The Embraer E175 was en route to El Paso when the incident occurred.

Air traffic control recordings indicate that while the aircraft did not lose cabin pressurization, the pilot reported that multiple shards of glass were falling into the cockpit, suggesting that more than one layer of the multi-layered windshield had been damaged. The flight landed safely and taxied to the gate without assistance. No injuries were reported among the passengers or crew.

The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) is investigating the cause of the failure. Passengers were transferred to a replacement aircraft to complete their journey to El Paso.
