Mesa Airlines windshield failure incident
Overview
On September 27, 2026, a Mesa Airlines Embraer E175, operating as United Express Flight 6309, was forced to make an emergency return to George Bush Intercontinental Airport in Houston after its cockpit windshield shattered shortly after takeoff.
The aircraft was en route to El Paso with 72 people aboard when the incident occurred at approximately 13,000 feet. While the aircraft maintained cabin pressure, pilots reported that glass had “busted completely through” the windshield, causing shards to fall into the cockpit.
The flight landed safely without injuries to passengers or crew. Following the landing, the Houston Fire Department assessed the aircraft, and passengers were transferred to a replacement flight to complete their journey. The Federal Aviation Administration (FAA) has initiated an investigation into the cause of the failure.
