Six-Year-Old Drowns in Private Pool in Gialova, Mother Charged with Negligent Homicide

A 6‑year‑old boy died after drowning in a private swimming pool at a residence in Gialova, Messenia, on the afternoon of 2 July. The child was unsupervised for a few minutes while his 32‑year‑old mother was cleaning on the upper floor. He was later found unconscious in the pool; emergency responders from EKAB performed resuscitation attempts, but he was pronounced dead after transport to the Pyrgos Health Centre.

Police have opened a pre‑investigation, ordered a forensic autopsy and have filed an indictment against the mother for homicide through negligence. The case has revived discussion of Greek pool‑safety regulations, which require lifeguards, safety markings and barriers for public and private pools.
